Types of nail extensions

Are you lost among the multitude of nail application techniques? Do you wonder which nail application to choose for a durable, aesthetic result that suits your lifestyle? This comprehensive guide offers a comparison of the most popular professional nail application techniques: gel, resin, polygel, acrylic, builder gel, Gel-X, and more. We will explore the different application options available to help you make an informed decision for your next manicure session or if you wish to start applying nails at home.

Why are there so many nail application techniques?

With the evolution of products and aesthetic expectations, nail application techniques have seen significant diversification. Some methods offer extreme resistance for very active clients, while others allow for an ultra-natural result or quick application. The choice of application depends on many criteria:

  • The desired hold (2, 3 or 4 weeks or more)
  • The type of natural nails (brittle, short, soft, long...)
  • The technical skill level of the person applying the nails
  • The time available for the service
  • The desired visual effect (shiny, domed, natural, structured)

Before going further, download our PDF comparison table which summarizes all techniques, their associated products, durations, and necessary tools.

1. Resin and powder: foolproof hold

A traditional technique well-known to nail technicians, resin and powder is ideal for strengthening nails on tips, without odor and allowing easy removal. It consists of applying a liquid resin to the nail or tip, then dipping or sprinkling an acrylic powder to create the structure. Curing is done with a catalyst (hardener), without the need for a UV lamp – except for the finish if a UV resin is used. Very resistant, this method is particularly recommended for clients looking for a solid and durable application, but it absolutely requires the use of tips for any extension. To learn more about resin nails, read our article on how to do resin nails.

Key features:

  • Duration: up to 4 weeks
  • Extensions: with tips
  • Associated products: resin powder, resin, hardener, UV finish (optional)
  • Advantages: easy removal by soaking in Dilue-Tout, great solidity
  • Limitations: requires good technical mastery, resins are difficult to preserve

2. Gel and powder: the beginner's ally

Gel and powder combines the flexibility of gel with the density of powder. This method is easier than resin, ideal for beginners: apply the dipping gel, sprinkle the powder, and cure under a UV/LED lamp. It offers a good balance between simplicity and efficiency. It does not require a spray hardener, reducing the risk of allergies. It can be used with all Oh Blush powders, offering you a beautiful range of colors. • Duration: 2 to 3 weeks
  • Extensions: yes with tips or forms
  • Associated products: resin powder, dipping gel, UV lamp, gel base and top coat
  • Advantages: easy application, good hold, removal with Dilue-Tout
  • Limitations: requires tips, a bit longer to do than the resin technique due to curing under the lamp

3. Builder Gel: for stronger natural nails

Builder Gel, is a flexible building gel packaged in a bottle, which applies like a polish while offering the benefits of a modeling gel. Self-leveling, it allows to solidify natural nails, to strengthen them or to lengthen them slightly using forms. Builder Gels are available in several nude or pink shades, making them suitable for many techniques: application on natural nails, extension with forms or reinforcement on tips to ensure optimal hold.

  • Duration: 2 to 4 weeks
  • Use: on natural nails or slight lengthening with forms
  • Associated products: UV lamp, gel base and top coat, gel polish (optional)
  • Advantages: ideal for thin and soft natural nails, self-leveling, can be used alone for a natural nude or pink effect
  • Limitations: not suitable for large extensions

4. Gel polish: semi-permanent manicure accessible to all

Gel polish is perfect for those who want a discreet or more noticeable look, without daily maintenance. Halfway between a classic polish and a gel, it requires a UV/LED lamp to harden and removes easily by melting it in Dilue-Tout. The hold of a gel polish is much longer than that of a regular polish. Learn more by reading our article Everything you need to know about Gel Polish.

  • Duration: approximately 2 weeks
  • Use: on natural nails or on tips
  • Associated products: UV lamp, gel base and top coat
  • Advantages: quick and easy application, wide choice of colors
  • Limitations: less resistant on brittle or soft nails

5. Acrygel / Polygel: the best of both worlds

A fusion of acrylic and gel, Acrygel (or Polygel) has won over technicians for its versatility. Its thick texture allows for sculpting without dripping, with a pleasant flexibility. It can be applied directly into a popit (form) then applied to the nail or formed directly on the nail with forms. Acrygel melts with Dilue-Tout, Polygel by filing. You can learn more by watching our video on how to do nails with Polygel.

  • Duration: 2 to 4 weeks
  • Extensions: possible with forms, popits or tips
  • Associated products: UV lamp, gel base and top coat, alcohol (to remove sticky effect)
  • Advantages: easy to work with, adaptable to all nail types
  • Limitations: requires a good UV/LED lamp and not to apply too much product

6. Hard Gel: for ultra-solid nails

Hard Gel, or rigid UV gel, is used for durable extensions, especially with forms. It is highly appreciated for its very shiny and clean finish, but requires technique. If you want to start with gel nails, check out our article on getting started with gel nails.

  • Duration: 3 to 4 weeks
  • Extensions: with forms
  • Removal: by filing only
  • Associated products: UV lamp, gel base and top coat, alcohol (to remove sticky effect)
  • Advantages: extreme solidity, ideal for regular clients
  • Limitations: longer and more tedious removal by filing

7. Acrylic: the classic method

Long used, especially in Asian salons, acrylic application remains a reference for its hold. A mixture of powder and monomer, it works quickly and hardens in the open air. Perfect for long lengths, it nevertheless requires good technical knowledge.

  • Duration: 3 to 4 weeks
  • Extensions: with forms
  • Recommended for: experienced technicians
  • Associated products: primer, top coat, acrylic powder, monomer liquid
  • Advantages: very resistant, ideal for complex structures
  • Limitations: very strong odor, removal by filing

8. Gel-X: the express full-cover tip

The Gel-X technique (or American application) consists of gluing a pre-formed tip onto the entire nail with a bonding gel (Tip Gel) and curing under a 1-finger LED lamp. Very quick, it provides an ultra-smooth result, ready to be decorated. Perfect for events or hurried clients, it nevertheless requires the application of polish for a beautiful finish.

  • Duration: 2 to 3 weeks
  • Application: without filing or sculpting
  • Associated products: gel primer, adhesive gel, full tips, gel polish
  • Advantages: huge time saver, impeccable finish
  • Limitations: requires a finish (gel polish or nail art), tips often need to be adjusted to nail size

How to choose the right nail application technique?

To choose well, ask yourself these key questions:

  • How long do you want the application to last?
  • What is your budget and the time allocated for the service?
  • Do you want to lengthen or simply strengthen your nails?
  • What texture do you prefer: fluid, flexible, rigid?

There is no one method better than another, but a more suitable method depending on the situation. The ideal is to master several techniques to adapt to each client or occasion.
