The essentials for doing your own nails
The starter kit for doing your own nails!
Want to get started with nail application? Whether it's just for yourself or to make a career out of it, we'll explain everything you'll need to get started!
A UV/LED lamp
To begin, you'll first need to equip yourself with a good lamp.
We suggest a UVLED lamp of at least 36W. If you're using a gel product, you need to check that it reacts well to 36W, which is usually the case. However, some gels will only react from 45W. So it's up to you to determine the type of wattage you'll need depending on the technique you choose to use.
At Ongles d'Or, our favorite lamp is the 48W X9 Plus Cordless/Rechargeable 110V Universal LED Lamp. We love it because it's cordless, it's 48W, and the interior is made of Stainless steel for better maintenance and optimal lifespan. You won't regret this purchase!
Files and sanding blocks
Whatever technique you choose, it's important to have several files and blocks.
You'll need at least 100/180 grit files; they'll have a rougher side and a softer side to allow you to do as much as possible. Note that the higher the grit number, the softer the file will be. The lower the grit number, the rougher your file will be.
Furthermore, we suggest starting with half-moon files. Why? Because they are a mix between a straight file and a curved file. For example, you can file right angles, which require a certain precision, as well as contours and more rounded shapes with the curved side.
Finally, equip yourself with sanding blocks because they are essential for preparing the natural nail and for filing the surface of the overlay!
Cuticle pusher and cuticle nippers
You will always need to properly prepare the nail before any covering.
Cuticles are the small skins located between the finger and the nail. It is therefore important to free the nail from these small skins, which tend to cover it, before applying a covering. By pushing back the cuticles, you allow your application to last longer. This also promotes better product application and a more precise application.
Manicure brush
A manicure brush is a necessary tool to adequately remove all dust. It is very easy to disinfect and is safe for your clients and for you. It carries no risk of contamination when properly disinfected.
pH control
pH control is a fundamental product in the preparation of the natural nail. It temporarily dehydrates the nail plate to provide more adhesion for the application.
Simply apply it generously to the nail plate in several layers until the liquid is quickly absorbed and the nail appears whitish. It is used as the last step in nail preparation. It can be used with resin, UV gel, acrylic techniques, or with UV or regular polishes.
Acetone and soak-off pots
If you wish to remove a coating, acetone is an essential product. It will allow you to do so in a few minutes.
For better use, we recommend getting soak-off pots with sponges. You can also get Dilue-Tout, which is also acetone-based but enriched with jojoba oil. It is a product that is gentler on the nails but does the same job. However, be careful not to use these products in a microwave or any object that provides constant heat, as you risk an explosion or fire.
Plastic bibs
Bibs are essential for nail application: they protect the work surface from liquids (alcohol, acetone, etc.), glues, acrylic, UV gels, and resins. The embossed texture of the bib allows for better absorption of liquids than a simple paper towel, for example.
That's it! You're ready to get started! :)
