There are different nail application techniques: resin, gel, and acrylic. The acrylic nail application technique is one of the most popular in the United States and Europe. Interestingly, in Europe, acrylic is referred to as resin! Don’t confuse this with the resin technique in Canada. To do acrylic nails at home, you’ll need an acrylic nail kit, which includes acrylic powder and monomer liquid. The combination of these two creates the acrylic nails. Getting the right ratio can be tricky, as it varies from one acrylic brand to another. I recommend practicing on a practice finger before doing your nails. You’ll also need acrylic brushes. To properly shape your nails, you’ll need nail forms, which are lined paper guides placed under your nail. The lines help you create nails of the same length easily. Tartofraises, a name that needs no introduction, has created an excellent tutorial on applying acrylic nails, specifically to repair a single nail. You can also extend all your nails using the same technique. Tartofraises uses clear acrylic for a transparent look, but you can also use white and pink acrylic for a French manicure effect.
Materials
- Clear acrylic
- Monomer liquid
- Flat medium acrylic brush
- Acrylic primer
- Nail forms (paper guides)
Steps for Acrylic Nail Application
- Prepare your nails for the application. You can follow the steps in this video: How to Prepare Nails Before Nail Application.
- Apply acrylic primer.
- Place the nail form under your natural nail, ensuring it covers part of the form. Fold the form to align it with your nail and fit its natural curve.
- Reapply primer without letting it dry.
- Immediately apply a bead of acrylic (acrylic + monomer liquid) near the middle of your nail and work it by spreading it onto the nail form to create the desired shape.
- Apply a slightly larger bead of acrylic at the stress point of your nail (the white area when you press on your nail).
- Finally, apply a small, slightly more liquid bead near the cuticle and blend it out.
- Let the acrylic dry slightly, then pinch the sides of your nail using a pinching tool or your fingers.
- Pinch the nail form and remove it.
- File the nail with a coarse grit file (80 or 100) to shape it, then use a finer grit file, and finish with a white buffing block.
- Clean your nail with alcohol and apply a top coat.
