The Starter Kit to Do Your Nails at Home!
Do you want to start doing your nails? Whether it's just for yourself or to make it your profession, here’s everything you’ll need to get started the right way!
A UV/LED Lamp
First and foremost, you’ll need a good lamp to get started.
We recommend a UV/LED lamp with at least 36W. If you’re using a gel product, make sure it works well with 36W, which is usually the case. However, some gels may only work with 45W or higher. It’s up to you to determine the wattage you’ll need based on the technique you choose to use.
At Ongles d’Or, our favorite lamp is the Universal LED Lamp 48W X9 Plus Wireless/Rechargeable 110V. We love it because it’s wireless, has 48W, and features a stainless-steel interior for easy maintenance and optimal durability. You won’t regret this purchase!
Nail Files and Buffing Blocks
Whatever technique you choose, it’s essential to have several files and buffing blocks.
You’ll need at least 100/180 grit files. They have one rough side and one smoother side, allowing you to accomplish a wide range of tasks. Keep in mind that the higher the grit number, the softer the file, and the lower the grit number, the rougher the file.
We suggest starting with half-moon files. Why? Because they combine the features of a straight file and a curved file. For example, you can file sharp angles with precision or shape rounded edges and contours using the curved side.
Lastly, get yourself some buffing blocks, as they are essential for preparing the natural nail and filing the surface of the overlay!
Cuticle Pusher and Cuticle Nipper
Preparing the nail is always a must before applying any overlay.
Cuticles are the small pieces of skin located between the finger and the nail. It’s important to clear the nail of these tiny skins that tend to cover it before proceeding with an overlay. Pushing back the cuticles allows your application to last longer and ensures better product application and precision.
Manicure Brush
A manicure brush is a necessary tool to properly remove all dust. It’s easy to disinfect and safe for both you and your clients. When disinfected properly, it eliminates any risk of contamination.
pH Balancer
The pH balancer is a fundamental product for preparing the natural nail. It temporarily dehydrates the nail plate to improve adhesion during application.
Simply apply it generously to the nail plate in multiple coats until the liquid absorbs quickly and the nail appears whitish. It’s the last step in nail preparation and can be used with resin, UV gel, acrylic, or even UV or regular polishes.
Acetone and Soaking Pots
If you want to remove an overlay, acetone is an essential product. It allows you to do so in just a few minutes.
To use it effectively, we recommend getting soaking pots with sponges. You can also try "Dilue-Tout," which is acetone-based but enriched with jojoba oil. It’s gentler on nails but just as effective. However, be careful not to use these products in a microwave or any device that provides constant heat, as they may cause an explosion or fire.
Dental Bibs
Bibs are essential for nail application: they protect the work surface from liquids (alcohol, acetone, etc.), glues, acrylics, UV gels, and resins. Their textured surface absorbs liquids much better than regular paper towels.
And there you go! You’re ready to get started! :)
